Beside being one of our all time favourite house labels, Drumpoet Community is also a shining example for all the budding labels out there of what a rock solid concept, genius artist selection and ruthless quality control can do to an imprint in the long run. DPC launched in 2006 as a collaboration between the Drumpoet Community and Compost Records and has grown in the past 8 years into Zurich's most enduring electronic label and an international force to be reckoned with. So far, the swiss imprint sports an impressive array of releases ranging from cutting edge deep house to sophisticated techno from an even more impressive artist repertoire of both local acts like Soultourist, Kawabata, Cavalier, Washerman, Quarion and foreign guests such as Manuel Tur, Dplay, John Daly, Fred Everything or Langenberg to name only a few. Stepping into their ninth year of activity, founders Alex Dallas and Ron Shiller decided it was the proper time to expand their branches beyond the firmly rooted concepts of DPC and to bring us an entirely new package both visually and aurally.
Their brand new IZU Rec. launches this April and to mark the debut release, Alex and Ron invited one of the pillars of Drumpoet Community for its inauguration. Dubbed the "Raw Poet" for his unique take on raw analog drum-machine-driven house sound which metamorphosed into the homonymous seminal album back in 2013, Washerman has the honour of launching IZU Rec. straight into the clubsphere. 'Blank City EP' is a high energy collection of 3 tracks built strictly with late night dancefloors in mind. The title track reigns on Side A and gets straight to business with its gritty filtered arp synth, tight kicks and vigorous percussion work. The vibe is then further pumped up by ghostly whispers, maddening strings, a well-placed touch of white noise and of course his trademark glassy chords ripping through the soundsystem.
Side B introduces 'Transmedia Dub' and its unique dub-heavy house sound that has the Azuni member blending together deep driving basslines, lovely swinged claps and hats and an epic interstellar dubbed out synth into one of his most innovative tracks to date. To top things off, Gianni also adds to the mix a simple yet effective vocal track, reminiscent of those classic Detroit underground traxx. Concluding this outstanding release is 'Evaporate', another club-friendly cut that is better suited for those post-ecstatic moments of resolution due to its longing bassline, sorrowful strings and melancholic synth work. Adding to the emotionally packed voyage is a stuttered synth stab, swirling ethereal loops and allusive male spoken words as a vocal track.
Washerman's 'Blank City EP' comes as a sophisticated taste of fine cuisine in this intoxicated fast food "deep house" scene and makes up the perfect debut for IZU Rec., setting the standard high and up to par with the DPC legacy.
