What happens when four French musically inclined vinyl heads get together and decide it's time to share a glimpse into their own universe for the whole world to hear? Moonrise Hill Material happens, that's what! Born straight out of Folamour, Ethyene, Kaffe Crème & Okwa's deep love and strong passion for the perfect house sound, MHM boasts the admirable belief that house music should be poetic, that melody creates stories which eventually translate into journeys and memories for the listener and that every trip is unique and eternal. We couldn't have said it better ourselves! The label's debut comes from the founders themselves, each delivering it's own vision into what a proper house club journey should sound like. From funk, jazz and hip-hop cuts to no-nonsense jacking house stomps, to deep tropical Chicago vibes and ending up with synth-heavy cosmic drum patterns, 'Traboules Nights' delivers a complete package for all tastes, moments and dance floors you could possibly think of.
Just take for example Folamour's 'Fucked Up Jazzmen' sample-heavy piece that blends perfectly together electric funk keys, swinging jazz drum patterns and strolling piano notes with sick hip-hop beats to create a deeply groovy and soulful crowd warmer that works equally well for intimate friends gatherings or big room club shenanigans. Or check out 'Jack My Sista'' which showcases Kaffe Crème's drumming skills he picked up during musical training, that march rhythmically under endless ethereal pads, a rolling modulated bass line and captivating drum machine arrangements. Simple, captivating and effective, jacking up a notch if you will.
Things get even better on the flip-side with Ethyène's 'Manhattune', an ode to the classic atmospheric Chicago deep house sound where celestial pads meet 70's sampled black music vocal samples and modern club friendly kick-drum patterns and percussion arrangements. The result is an uplifting, almost ecstatic journey that will definitely put some smile on people's faces on the dance floor. Last but not least, the Lyon-based Okwa unleashes his 'Cosmic Spirals', an elaborate fusion between hypnotising melodies, energising synth leads and stabs, intense acoustic drumming and roaring bass line, that puts an epic end to a monumental first release of a highly promising label, worthy of our attention.
'Traboules Nights' is already available for purchase and its limited pressing of only 250 copies means you have to act fast if you want a copy. Until the record arrives, make sure to check out the podcast series on their soundcloud page to further accustom with each of the four founding fathers' taste in music ;)
