Half an year after their amazing 'Funny Angle EP', the dutch-based part production outfit, part vinyl only label, Times Are Ruff dropped their 7th release earlier this month. Elusive as they might be, the dutch-trio has been working hard in their studio away from prying eyes, carefully brewing for us one of their trademark house concoctions. Aptly titled Got Five On It', their new EP features 5 amazing house cuts with an emphasis on looped sounds and strong disco-house influences.
Right from the leading track we are introduced to a world of mellow grooves, hard kicks and tropical drums. 'Concrete' is a deep groover, that's for sure, one that makes great use of some carefully selected samples out which the smooth vocal cuts and short guitar riffs really stand out. Up next 'That's Funky' is exactly what it advertises: a damn funky piece of looped disco-house that again shows the trio's knack for cutting and sampling. The filtered string riffs, steady kicks and regimental-like drums blend perfectly with that funky bass line and sweet vocal slices
The B-side keeps the rhythm going strong with 'That Phase Track', a great late night club banger that slaps away with its strong kick, swung hats and hastily driven percussions that receive a nasty dose of distortion on the breakdowns. The key element that also gives this track's title is an ever present phaser filter creatively circling around from start to finish. 'Danger' comes next and its a dangerously funky crowd pleaser that employs a groovalicious bass loop and funked up guitar cuts, perfect to get those drinks flowing and the smiles going. If 'Danger' was funky as funk, 'Kenny' follows proudly with a slamming disco vibe that masterfully rises the tension in the room only to release all that stored energy with an epic sampling of some discolicious strings, ending this release in full cut-n-loop glory.
