Exactly one year ago I accidentally stumbled on a little record that caught my attention due to its deep smooth sounds, but also due to the very clever artist moniker and label name. I'm talking about the second Plumage release and owner's Norm de Plume 'Ohio Replayed' release that I gladly reviewed which eventually got me into doing a complete feature of Norm via both an interview and a podcast episode. But enough with the cheesy self-promotion because Plumage Records is back with a special package that joins two of the finest slow-mo deep disco producers around for the label's first ever 4-track EP. After Norm De Plume's highly successful 'Disco Lounge' party in London back in February that had Ben La Desh playing his first ever set in UK's capital metropolis, Norm invited the dutch dj, producer and party enthusiast to add his own trademark sound to his imprint's catalogue. What ensued is a brilliant collaboration of Ben and Norm, both delivering an original production and also remixing each other's tracks.
Initially scheduled for release this Monday, 'Give To Receive' got pushed back a few weeks and drops on the 18th of April, giving us a bit more time to plan our vinyl purchases accordingly. The EP opens with Norm De Plume's 'Roll On', a deep and groovy original composition that has Norm discarding his usual cutting and sampling in favour of melodic synth melodies, organic percussions, a rather chic bass line and joyful filtered chorus loops. Norm's Side of the wax continues with his remix of Ben La Desh's 'Lotion', a deeply touching lullaby of lush pads, stuttered string lines and moving bass line. Fans of Norm De Plume will instantly recognise his trademark drum patterns an percussion samples, as well as the inimitable pulsing organ that made 'Ohio Replayed' one of the best slo-mo disco tracks of 2014. Budding producers take note: this is sample recycling at its finest!
Switching over to Ben's Side, we are greeted by 'Lotion', a silky smooth return to the deep, sleazy low slung trademark sound that simply oozes Ben La Desh from all its pores. His unique formula consists of adding a slapping kick drum and snappy percussions, mix them with luscious dreamy synth pad and rumbling bass line, then sprinkle funky disco riffs and jazzy vocal cuts and you've got the ideal soul-soothing ointment. Just rub it on your skin and soak up the sun, it's oh so good! Ending his side and the EP in memorable style, Ben reaches to his sunny tropical side and gives Norm's 'Roll On' a joyful twist full of emotion. From the ambient landscapes of liquid springs and echoing melodies to the slick drums, swung percussions and rolling bass line, Ben's take is pure good vibes. Add an ecstatic breakdown, rich cosmic pads and a mesmerising synth play to the mix and you've got the perfect track to hook a crowd with.
So there you have it: Norm De Plume and Ben La Desh making history on Puumage's forthcoming limited pressing of 300 hot wax records. Summer, here we come!
