Exactly 6 years ago I discovered an artist which impacted me in ways I could never have predicted and changed my view on house music completely. He completely influenced both my everyday life and my musical path and ultimately led me to starting this website to share and promote what I believe to be the modern sound of the underground. I owe everything to Danilo Plessow, especially to his Motor City Drum Ensemble moniker and he will always have a special place in my heart, my record case and the occasional sets that I play.
MCDE's 'Raw Cuts' series launched in the late cold winter of 2008 with two brilliant disco house edits of long forgotten soul and funk classic tracks. It continued releasing a couple more records not only from Danilo's magical talent, but also from a few selected artists like The Revenge, Latecomer, Pablo Valentino and Michael Gracioppo. This year, to celebrate the ending of the concept series, MCDE has invited three of the most unique and innovative names in the house scene, to remix one of the Raw Cuts jams each.
Alone on the A-side, Marcellus Pittman strips Raw Cuts 5 down to its roots, retaining the original vocal sample and a hint of the original organ keys and adding a haunting loop and various subtle percussions to keep the song going at a steady pace. Catch the Tiger & Woods 1-bar loop in the breakdown and you're in for a good laugh :)
Side B starts with a Mike Huckaby signature remix, a smooth flowing atmospheric Detroit deep house piece that bears absolutely no resemblance to any of the original Raw Cuts and could have easily been released as a standalone track and nobody would have noticed. So subtle and unique his work is in deconstructing and reconstructing bits and pieces from each track to which he ads his personal touch of haunting synths, metallic stabs and weird bass lines.
To put a glorious end to the release, Recloose takes a warm and soulful, melancholic almost approach to the series that features a soothing orchestrated string ensemble that grows and grows from silent to epic, a famous vocal sample and a collection of mellow kicks, soft drums and subtle jingles making this not only a great EP ender, but also the perfect set finisher for any party, any season, any year.
'Raw Cuts Remixes' drops on the 7th of May which gives you enough time to check out MCDE's discography and hunt down those increasingly rare 'Raw Cuts' pressings.
