It's no secret that here at We Play Wax, we like Montel. To be honest, we can't get enough of his music, so much that we secured both an interview and a podcast episode from him and now it's time to introduce his newest project to the world. As he previously hinted about it in the interview, Montel finally decided to take matters into his own hands and is launching his own brand new label Bass Hit Dub next month. The Belfast-based imprint's first release will showcase two original house bangers accompanied by two additional remixes in a complete dance-floor friendly package.
'The Journey' starts with a hard hitting, dripping-wet old-skool acid-tinged club monster featuring a simple yet effective atmospheric vocal sample that builds along the Detroit-inspired tight kicks, slamming percussions and wide bass into an explosive climax that's meant to do one thing: wreck havoc dance-floors worldwide. Illyus & Barrientos' take is a more bass-line driven roller that retains the high pulse of the original, but adds a more hypnotic layer to the mix, pushing the track into modern house territory.
Turning the record over we are greeted by a deeper, more hypnotic side of Montel as 'For So Long' starts flowing smoothly, filling up the room with its airy vocals, lush pads and echoed stabs. The rhythm rides strong and confident with the use of a simple playful synth loop that runs atop a big bass line, until it abruptly switches to progressive tribal drum madness on the breakdown. Oli Furness ends the release in dirty old-skool warehouse style, with his own re-interpretation of 'For So Long', a fast paced raw jacking madness that steadily grows adding more and more elements on the go until it goes completely bonkers reaching its highest peak.
I strongly recommend marking down the 2nd of June into your calendar and be fast, as this will sell faster than the bass hits the dub!
