In a time when we are obsessed with the future as ever before, we tend to forget, ignore or even discard the treasures of the past, often times left buried beneath layers and layers of novelties. I admit it, I am one of those people who gets so excited with fresh and upcoming releases, I tend to completely forget the last record I bought last month, not to mention last year. However, I have been digging deeper and deeper in the digital archive of discogs lately and youtube also seems to be favouring more and more classic house tracks recommendations so I've decided to start a new Timeless Classics section on We Play Wax.
The first voyage takes us 23 years back in time to what might actually be the first ever EP released by David Moufang under his early moniker of House Grooves. The legitimacy of the moniker is somewhat disputed by purists and I would go as far as to say that it was picked up entirely by mistake following the graphic designer's failure in properly distinguishing the artist as being Move D. Nonetheless, David is credited on the record as arranging and recording the tracks and all this confusion only serves as a way of hiding his identity and keeping the record deep in the underground, away from pesky fanboys. It also means that the record was not picked by too many people, which can be easily seen from the absurd prices it fetches on discogs on the rare occasions it surfaces (you can get a mint copy right now for €80). What makes this EP even more special is that it is the only house record ever released by Time Unlimited, a label founded in the Mannheim-Heidelberg area in September 1992 by Joachim Keil and dedicated exclusively to trance and hard trance.
I really hope that with the whole 90's house resurgence and seeing that house classics are getting re-pressed more and more, we will finally see this beauty resurrected as there is plenty life left in this for another 23 years for sure. meanwhile, have a listen to the playlist I put together and make sure to go and see David play, it's a life-changing experience and who knows, you might even hear one of these tracks in the set ;)
