Deep house sensation duo Detroit Swindle's imprint, releases their fifth record today and they invited another one of their own Dutch fresh talents to sign the cut. Fritz Wentink has already dropped a few noteworthy releases in the past 2 years on labels such as Wolf Recordings, 20:20 Vision, Shifting Peaks, Borg or Wolfskuil and now it's time to showcase his fresh house sounds on a proper Dutch label. We've already talked about Heist Recordings on 2 separate occasions and rightfully so, considering the consistent quality of their constant pursue of enriching the scene with Holland's cream of the crop.
'Family Dinner' doesn't sound like your usual social-binding playlist you would normally play to your next of kin while stuffing your face full of Hachee and Limburgse Vlaai, but it does make for a lively conversational piece nonetheless. The vibes mostly revolve around a modern deep house sound, with various influences and subtle touches from outside the genre. Take for example the leading track on Side A 'Shrewd', a soft warm-up tune that features a few distinct disco elements and a great vocal loop. Then there's 'Ligament', a rhodes driven groover that's jazzed up with slapped snares, swinged drums and out -of-the-norm kicks.
Side B goes even further along with 'Sauce', a very distinct jazz-infused piece of downtempo house where Frits goes to town with juicy layers of retro melodies, syncopated percussion loops and a very distinct vocal line by Loes Jongerling. But it's for the ending track that the Dutch artist mixes all of his best ingredients into 'If I was to gravy you', a steaming hot and erotic piece of modern house filled with thumping kicks, slapped claps and sedutinve moans and whispers. The weirdness factor is present though starting right from the unusual arrangement, to the strange vintage-like melodies and ending with some peculiar vocal slices of happily giggling children on the playground.
Heist keeps surprising us with their every release and they are definitely on the track of becoming the next big thing. It's only a matter of time ;)
